IN 1998 Mike Winland opened his first photography studio, MW Studios, in downtown Charleston, West Virginia. His creative approaches to lighting and posing have since won the appreciation and loyalty of his clients and the respect of professionals in the photographic industry.
Mike is best known for his cutting-edge, commercially-inspired High School Senior portraits and his emotional and artistic Wedding imagery. Mike's wife Rose says, "I've always thought Mike has a unique ability to interpret how a person likes to see herself (or himself) and reflect that back to them in imagery the honors their multi-faceted pereonalities."
In 2005 Mike moved his studio from downtown Charleston to Kanawha City and the indoor and outdoor set opportunities he offers his clients there continue to grow. (The free parking is nice, too!) At the same time, MW Studios became Mike Winland Studios.

Mike's wife and business partner, Rose, is an integral part of the Mike Winland Studios experience. From your first telephone call or visit, to the day of your session or Wedding, and beyond to your final image decisions, Rose is happy to assist you with both practical information and creative suggestions. Together, Mike and Rose aspire to make your photographic experience relaxed, fun - and definitely memorable!
High School Senior "pix" are Mike and Rose's favorite. "Seniors are fun to work with. Actually, it's not work at all, because we're just playing and experimenting with the posing and the lighting and the angles..." Mike says. "And then he gets the images on the computer and plays some more!" Rose laughs.
Running neck and neck with the Seniors for "favorite" are Mike's Wedding clients. "We're honored to work with the couples on one of the most defining days of their lives," says Rose. "I think working as a team on our weddings gives our clients a more comprehensive coverage, while at the same time preventing the photography experience from feeling rushed." "And two pairs of eyes are better than one at watching the details and scouting out unique opportunites,".
"Mike loves his work. Seriously, sometimes he'll be on the computer late into the night and I'll come in - 'what are you doing?' - and he'll say, 'just playing.' And when we're seeing each new client's images in print for the first time, it's kind of like Christmas. We're all "oooh" and "aaah" - and then when we sit with our clients they're all "oooh" and "aaah" - it's pretty gratifying," says Rose.
Mike and Rose are proud parents of daughter, Sierra, and son, River. In addition to photography, Mike gets a kick out of kayaking, and likes to spend his "off" days on the Wild, Wonderful rivers of West Virginia - season and wife permitting.
